Megan Schultz Testimonial

Megan Schultz, WH Class of 2004 writes about her Heights experience.  Math has been a very strong program in the High School.  This Fall, the proven Math Curriculum, EveryDay Math is being implemented to boost learning at the Elementary level.   Math continues to be an area where Heights student shine.

When I graduated from Wisconsin Heights, I soon became one of the lucky college freshmen who knew exactly what they wanted to major in. I entered the University of Wisconsin-Platteville knowing that I wanted to go into Mathematics Education. Even though pursuing my Math degree and my teaching license has had its fair share of challenges, I have never doubted that this was the right profession for me.

My desire to become a middle school and high school Math teacher started when I was a sophomore at Wisconsin Heights. My Math teacher, Lauren Jensen, got me involved in the math tutoring program, and I was able to tutor eighth grade math students for three years. After sharing with my teachers that I was interested in becoming a math teacher, they were more than supportive. Teachers like Lauren Jensen and Kathy Good have always gone out of their way to help me gain experiences in their classrooms with tutoring, grading papers, and working one-on-one with students.

Although I have always felt grateful to the teachers who have helped me along the way, I didn’t realize just how lucky I was to have some of the opportunities I had at Heights until later on. In my fourth year of college, I started to work on my resume with many of my Math professors. I put down Lauren Jensen as one of my references since she had supervised me as a middle school math tutor. My Math professors were so impressed that I had her as a teacher and couldn’t believe how lucky I was. Many people who are not involved in the Math Education field do not realize how lucky our school district is to have someone like Lauren Jensen as a teacher here. My college professors think very highly of her and she is very respected in the Math field. I also had the opportunity to attend the Wisconsin Mathematics Council’s annual conference in May with UW-Platteville. Lauren Jensen also attended this conference and was giving presentations on the latest technology that can be incorporated into Math classrooms. My professors were so excited to go to her presentation and couldn’t wait to hear the information she would be presenting. Wisconsin Heights students are very lucky to be able to benefit from a teacher with this much knowledge in his or her subject field.

Aside from my family and friends, it is great to know that I have another support system back home that I can count on as well. The Wisconsin Heights faculty has always been willing to do whatever they can to help me achieve my goals. If there is one thing I have learned in my pursuit of becoming a teacher, it is that quality education starts with great teachers. That is something that the Wisconsin Heights School District has, and something that all of the students who attend this school district will benefit from like I did.
